Sami languages
The Sami languages are spoken by people in the north of Sweden, Finland, Norway and the extreme northwestern Russia.
They belong to the
Finno-Lappic language group. At least to be divided in to 11 languages, they are divided in a west and an east group.
The Western Sami languages:
Southern Sami
Spoken by about 2000 people in Norway and Sweden but only
ca 500 of them are able to speak fluently.
Ume Sami
Just a few or ca 10 speakers left.
Pite Sami
Also called Arjeplog Sami. Also ca 10 speakers left.
Lule Sami
The second largest of the Sami languages.
Northern Sami
The largest Sami language, with ca 15000-25000 speakers. Ca 2000 live in Finland and ca 5-6000 live in Sweden.
Eastern Sami languages;
Inari Sami
Ca 300-400 speakers in Finland of which most of them are middle aged or older.
Kemi Sami
Is an extinct form that were spoken in Finnish Lappland.
Skolt Sami
About 400 speakers in Finland and 20-30 speakers in Russia.
Akkala Sami
Extinct form that was spoken in the inland parts of the Kola Peninsula in Russia.
Kildin Sami
500 people on the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia.
When written, the
Cyrrilian alphabet is used.
Ter Sami
Has been spoken in the northeastern part of the Kola Peninsula but only a handful of speakers remain.
